Jens, based on your recommendation, I bought a used 2007 Sheraton for $400. After replacing the pickups with Seymour Duncan 59’s and the bridge with a Nashville Tune o Matic, I have a great guitar. Thanks!

You are a good teacher, only a European could explain things in such a great way. Many guitarists think you have to go to a great school to find the best teachers, which worked for many players that became successful. Over time, those teachers retire or pass away. You have to be able to teach yourself to an extent to get to a certain level of comprehension and studying and practice is the only way. Things don't come by osmosis and wasting time believing that is wasting time. Knowledge is power, without it, you are left in rhe dust. There is no simple or easy way, you have to have a foundation or you will be frustrated and lost as in any other field. Trying to fake knowledge and experience is a comedy, really playing is the reality of communication, feel, knowledge, creativity.

After listening to tritone substitutions for V chords for years, I'm having trouble hearing a subdominant function for the Neapolitan chord. Sure, if you follow a ♭II chord with a V chord, it has a pre-dominant character. And that's how ♭II is described in my college music theory texts. But if you move from ♭II to I, I hear that ♭II as dominant.

Ok. I would say that there is more to a chord than a bass note, but I can't tell you how you hear things

using a Gm9/Bb ( rootless shell chord ) instead of the Gm7 could be a little smoother sounding moving to the Abmaj7.

    • @JensLarsen

Yes, but I find the effect of Cmaj7 to Gm7 a lot stronger than Cmaj7 Bbmaj7 (but of course that is a matter of taste)

Eb major works well for the G- and the F-. Another progression would be C major-Gsus #9- A-maj7-IVdim-C maj13. So staying true to the C major dim scale. On the V you can always add the to the #9 for that special effect. You can also put in the VI-maj7 so you can play the A, A#,B,C, G# and resolve to the 13th, on top. Pretty! Thank you Jens for another example of a beautiful chord progression! ❤🎶

I agree that the one-string exercise does not work for this lesson. Too me, the one-string works for training your ear to hear the intervals. It gets you out of playing patterns. We have many tools to use, and need to make use of them in the right application. Nice video Jens. Thank you!

Comping seems like it should be easy -- just groove with the music -- but it's easy to walk off a cliff in rhythmic confusion. Jens is a thoughtful and creative teacher, and comping is one of the subjects Jens teaches best, in my opinion.

Yes Cmaj7/G - Fm6(9). Or let the minor3rd and the 9 swap places to make a F6sus(#9) for more desperation. Now it resolves more into Abmay7 but also now the Fm7(9) wants the 7 in the bass.
